Stonewall campaign and film: ‘No Bystanders’

If your staff (teaching or support) heard offensive language in a corridor or classroom, would they tackle? For example, students casually using the word ‘gay’ to mean useless or rubbish, or students using the word ‘chav’, as a means of abuse?

Stonewall has launched a hard-hitting and powerful 60 second film, which demonstrates that, unchecked, the abusive language children learn in the playground stays with them into adulthood. It encourages people – including gay people – to check their own language, and pledge not to be a bystander whenever they hear it from others.

Sir Ian McKellen, who lends his voice to the film, says: ‘Abuse ruins people’s lives. We all have a responsibility to take a stand and put a stop to it. By making sure that bullying is reported and prejudice is challenged, we can help ensure that every person in Britain lives free from fear of persecution and violence.’

Insulting or Assaulting another living thing may seem like a joke and okay to do or say because others do it; but just remember how does it feel when it is aimed at you? If we as civilized people do not respect each other and stand up and say that it is wrong to treat someone in a way which you would not like to be treated yourself; then the nurturing of next generations to appreciate all that has gone before will all be in vain.
