Spotlight on training

Did you know that one in five learners aged between 16 and 25 will have a mental health difficulty? Are non-teaching staff such as reception, security and student services staff clear on how best to support these learners, and are they equipped to deal with issues including those with safeguarding implications? Do tutors know how to provide effective support? Do all staff understand that effectively supporting these learners is an integral part of robust safeguarding procedures?

What would you do if a visiting speaker requested gender segregation in the audience?

Universities UK recently published guidance that included a hypothetical case study exploring the legal considerations of an external speaker requesting gender segregation in the audience at an event. The case study suggested that voluntary segregation of the audience may be possible, and this caused controversy across the sector and within national media. How would your staff respond to such a request?

Is race hate speech always race hate speech?

Is it ever ok to use the ‘N’ word, ‘P’ word, ‘Y’ word? Can a community ‘reclaim’ a word that has been used against them in the past as a term of abuse? Do you and your staff agree with David Cameron that using the word is ok if its use is not motivated by hate?
